The librarians at Greenfield Community College are dedicated. They will round up students with pressing library need and deliver them to the library where librarians with awesome nicknames like “Shoes,” “Downtown,” and “Jackie” will use all their librarian powers to help get student research accomplished.
Nominated for Best Comedy and Best Spoof, we’re also impress that the GCC Librarians were able to convince GCC Public Safety that lights AND sirens were needed to make this library video excellent.
I don’t know about you, but I believe in my heart of hearts that “library induction” just has a better ring to it than “library orientation.” The good people at the University of Plymouth in Devon, UK think so too.
This collaboration between the Faculty of Arts librarians and Jon Mason, a third-year media arts student, consists of a three-video library induction for “fresher students.” Part I expands on the idea that, while the library has books, lots of books, it also has more than just books. Part II explains how to find books and other materials in the library. And Part III moves beyond books and into other electronic resources.
These short libvids (totaling about 7 minutes all together) are also pretty funny, including living history actors, interviews with students in their squalid apartments, and smart editing choices. The upbeat, silly mood ranges from tongue-in-cheek to just plain cheeky. Super fun to watch.
We’ve nominated this series for three LibVid Awards: Best Editing, Best Narration, and Best Comedy.
Yavapai College student Ima Tryin has a big problem. Her term paper is hemorrhaging red ink with an acute case of plagiarism. As Ima tries to save her writing, she encounters Reporter Gwen, who is doing a special report on plagiarism, helpful doctors and nurses, men in black, and even the Grim Reaper.
Like a David Lynch movie, but a lot easier to follow, Diagosis: Plagiarism succeeds in making a plagiarism tutorial that is in-depth, and yet fun to watch. Part 1 and Part 2 combined clock in at about 15 minutes, nearly feature length by LibVid standards, but will keep you on the edge of your seat throughout. Popcorn is recommended.
Diagnosis: Plagiarism is nominated for Best Comedy, Best Wardrobe or Makeup, and Best Special Effects.
I hadn’t planned on posting this week. It’s Winter Break and I know many of our loyal readers will be away from their desks visiting family, skiing, eating leftovers, etc. And I’m at work where I could be spending the few quiet days of the year working on research guides or plowing through a backlog of approval slips. Or I could spend the time trolling for fantastic library videos. Guess what I chose?
Heather Schubert at the Hill Country Middle School Library in Austin, Texas knows that the holiday break can bring a bit too much down-time. In this cautionary tale, nominated for Best Acting – Librarian and Best Comedy, we learn all about how Heather spent her last winter break and the importance of checking out some good books before the school closes down for the holidays.
We also learn that school libraries can make really fun videos too. Awesomeness!
Are all those library holiday parties leaving you feeling a little hungover and sluggish? You definitely need The Betty Glover Library Workout Tape. This chestnut from 1987 will get your blood pumping.
The Betty Glover Library Workout Tape is nominated for three awards: Best Acting – Librarian, Best Comedy, and Best Spoof.
Libraries and wedding planning go hand in hand in this video from the Cambridge Public Library. Nominated for Best Comedy and Best Public Library Video, this thrifty bride-to-be uses library resources to help her prepare for her nuptials, from trimming the guest list to learning a choreographed first dance.
Hopefully it will go well for the new happy couple. If not, the library has resources for all kinds of life events.
Rutgers University, Camden has been producing some great animators recently so it’s nice to see Vibiana Bowman and her co-conspiring reference librarians at the Paul Robeson Library putting all that skill to good use. This video, nominated for Best Animation and Best Comedy, is part of set of three that tackle the always amusing topic of Plagiarism (how I wish WordPress had a Scary or Creepy font for that word). There is even a quiz. Yes, folks, actual assessment! While the setting is a 1950s classroom, complete with blue-haired teacher, the animation style is hilariously Gilliam-esque. It’s just like that famous Monty Python anti-cheating skit that never was. Only in New Jersey. And by librarians.
We all know that what we read can have an impact on our lives. The folks at the Alberta’s Libraries campaign Books and Beyond have found a great way to show just how big that impact can be, and they do it in about 30 seconds! This great library ad, nominated for Best Comedy and Best Really Short Video, gives you two funny vignettes that will make you stop and think the next time you pick a book off a the shelf.
Take a tour of the Harper College Library on a book cart pushed by a silent library worker. Your tour guide, dressed in a suit and swilling coffee (and not from a spill-proof-mug, heavens!), happily gives you the run-down of the library’s services and products. Oh, if only he could just remember your name!
This madcap adventure is nominated for Best Acting – Librarian and Best Comedy.
