Need. Help. Now.

11 05 2010

This is the story of one very hairy Brown University student’s quest to get the help he needs to write his paper. The assignment [GASP!] is due in [DOUBLE GASP!] four hours. Can one overly-helpful librarian help him find what he needs to research and write his paper in time?

This libvid is one in a six-part series to get Brown students up to speed quickly and easily in finding books, articles, and where to go for help. It’s nominated for Best Acting – Non-librarian for Professor Darrell West’s performance as the Andy’s imaginary Research Fairy.

Now don’t get Cocky!

It’s so hard to give an earnest library introduction when there’s a big red bird trying to upstage you in the background. University of South Carolina’s Dean of Libraries Tom McNally focuses on the task at hand, but USC’s mascot does his best to ham it up.

Dean McNally is nominated for Best Acting – Librarian for not breaking character. And Cocky’s nominated for Best Acting – Non-Librarian for being a crack-up.

The Anxiety of Searching for a Book

You did it again, UCLA.  You created a well-edited, entertaining lib vid that in my opinion would sweep the Best Tears, Best Facial Expressions, and Best Use of Opera  categories, but until we get more nominations for those non-existent departments you will have to settle for a Best Acting- Non-librarian and Best Editing nomination.  Hey, maybe UCLA is on to something here; if libraries were more like competitive athletic events, perhaps users would come to view finding resources as an exciting challenge instead of a daunting one? ;)

“Nice rotunda you got here!”

Tommy’s Trip to the Library is a 1950s-style educational romp through Oregon State University’s Valley Library. Breaking down the fourth wall, Tommy talks  the omniscient narrator and learns all about the library’s features and services. Although no librarians act in this LibVid, it’s nominated for three categories:  Best Acting – non-librarian, Best Narration, and Best Special Effects.

Watch for the surprise Twilight Zone-esque twist at the end.

Our first nomination: “Fairfield Beach” from Fairfield University

12 11 2009

This video, which is nominated in both the Best Drama and Best Acting – non-Librarian categories, shows just how important the university library can be in the soap opera lives of students.  The acting is fantastic and, while I’m not a huge fan of the genre, I love how the folks at Fairfield use it here.  Even better, the video is interactive.  The viewer can navigate the choose-your-own-adventure narrative to explore different plots and different ways the library can help.  This one is a lot of fun.

The above is a trailer but you can watch (and interact) with the full video here.
