One word: OMGBABIEZZZZZ!!!!!!!!!!!!! This LibVid is cute enough to make the ovaries of any librarian quiver with longing, even they’re not female! You’d have to be made of stone to not to crack a smile at the joyous laughter of a baby in his crib reading a book, and the adorable father that peers over him. For all the warm fuzzies that the Finnish Library Association generates with “Like Father, Like Son,” we are nominating this video for Best Foreign Language Video (okay, so baby cooing is probably a universal language, but this does come to us from Finland!) and Most Heartwarming.
Cue the “Aww’s”!

Libraries Will Survive
22 09 2010Awesomer or awkwarder than the gang from the University of Washington Information School? They are in for some stiff competition from this creative bunch at Central Rappahannock Regional Library in Virginia, who responded to recent budget cuts for libraries with this rendition of Gloria Gaynor’s disco hit, “I Will Survive.” Nominated for Best Musical, this video serves as a reminder to our patrons that libraries are still there to serve them, even in these trying times!
And as if you needed additional reasons to visit your local library, apparently libraries now come with shirtless men on the loading dock!

Thanks for the heads-up!
2 08 2010Leimeux Library at Seattle University created this public service announcement to advise their patrons about the construction that would likely create a frustrating experience for them in the library, and yet they did so in a completely charming and cheerful manner, complete with animation and sound effects! What better way to stave off complaints from potentially agitated library patrons? Communication and cuteness, it wins every time!

Columbus Public Library: In 3D!
10 03 2010Except you don’t need 3D glasses at home to get the full effect! This public service announcement from the Columbus Public Library in Columbus, Nebraska, manages to create a pretty neat-looking 3D pop-up book from digital still images and live footage. The musical score that occasionally chimes in conveys a whimsical sense of adventure, and the animation and special effects are impressive! My favorite part of this two-minute libvid? The last ten seconds, where the young protagonist explains that library staff are always “popping” up to help him if he can’t find something! Get it?? Haha!!

The Anxiety of Searching for a Book
4 02 2010You did it again, UCLA. You created a well-edited, entertaining lib vid that in my opinion would sweep the Best Tears, Best Facial Expressions, and Best Use of Opera categories, but until we get more nominations for those non-existent departments you will have to settle for a Best Acting- Non-librarian and Best Editing nomination. Hey, maybe UCLA is on to something here; if libraries were more like competitive athletic events, perhaps users would come to view finding resources as an exciting challenge instead of a daunting one?

The heart pounding drama of….the TS!! (Technical Services, that is)
27 01 2010Most laypeople are unaware of what happens in the behind the scenes world of libraries. The staff at Arlington Heights Memorial Library in Illinois set out to bring Technical Services awareness to the masses with this ER spoof. The suspense never stops, and by the end of this six minute long video we are nearly brought to tears by the heroic efforts of the TS. This video is nominated for Best Drama, Best Acting-Librarian, and Best Spoof.

2 Action Figures, 20 DVDs
12 01 2010This 32 second spot by the Orange County Library System of Florida features two action figures decked out in military garb, Doug & Sam, who are the protagonists of a series of promotional videos for the library. The pair definitely give me the chuckles. This video is a contender for Best Public Library Video and Best Really Short Video.

A Library Crooner
11 12 2009The smooth voice of library crooner Michael London from Seneca College’s Markham Campus Library in Canada will surely get you in the mood to….uhh….. check out books from your local library! Mike’s finger-snapping smooth moves and his silky praise of libraries will get you singing along to the catchy “S-E-N-E-C-A L-I-B-R-aries” in no time. With nearly 30,000 views, this video has already proven to be a hit on YouTube, and so it is in the running for Best Musical.

A Brain, a Heart, AND Courage!?
4 12 2009The Librarian of Oz by UCLA libraries is one video in their Lite Brite series (Library Instruction To Everyone!), and really showcases how makeup, costumes, and familiar characters can go a long way towards making a library video fun and interesting. Follow the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion on the Road to Research! This video is up for Best Wardrobe or Make-up and Best Spoof .
